Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will not travel to Sri Lanka to participate in the Bangladesh one-day international series after an old injury recurred during practice.

Team manager Minhajul Abedin told bdnews24.com about the captain's condition on Friday night after Mashrafe rolled off the ground at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

"His injury is serious, he does not go to Sri Lanka, we have not picked up his replacement yet," he said.

Minhajul said Saifuddin Ahmed, a bowler, was also expelled from the team due to a spasm in his back.

Later, the Bangladesh Cricket Board or the BCB announced that opening batter Tamim Iqbal will lead the Tigers during the tour.

Shakib Al Hasan and the batter Liton Das have already rested, the BCB has included pacer Taskin Ahmed and Farhad Reza in the Sri Lanka series team.

BCB sports doctor Debashis Chowdhury said earlier that Mashrafe was not well after hurting the old wound.

“It is not in good condition. His tour of Sri Lanka now depends on the management of the team, "Debashish said.

The Bangladesh team will go to Sri Lanka on Saturday to play three ODI on July 26, 28 and 31 after an adjustment match on July 23.

Mashrafe played every game in the World Cup in England after injuring the tendon of his right leg during the three-nation series in Ireland, which also involved the West Indies in May.

He returned to the locker room after injuring the hamstring in his right leg while shooting in the nets on Friday.

In addition to Minhajul, the chairman of the BCB Cricket Operations Committee, Akram Khan, visited Mashrafe there.

This will be the first time that Mashrafe has been missing ODIs due to an injury since winning the captaincy in 2014.
